Accurate measurements are crucial for ordering the right replacement windows. Here’s a basic guide to get you started. Remember, it’s always recommended to consult with a professional for precise measurements and expert advice.

Steps to Measure the Size of Windows

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil and paper

Measure the Size of a Window

Determine the window type: Different window types require slightly different measurements. Common types include single-hung, double-hung, sliding, casement, bay, and bow windows.

Measure from the outside: Always take measurements from the outside of the window opening, not the existing frame.

Measure brick to brick: This means measuring the distance between the bricks on each side and top of the opening.

Measure width and height: Take three measurements for both width and height: top, middle, and bottom for width; left, middle, and right for height.

Choose the smallest measurement: Select the smallest measurement for both width and height.

Subtract 10mm: Deduct 10mm from both the width and height measurements to determine the size of the replacement window.

For Example

If your smallest width measurement is 90cm and the smallest height measurement is 120cm, you would subtract 10mm from each, resulting in a window size of 89cm x 119cm.

Smallest Measurements:

  • Width: 90cm
  • Height: 120cm

Deduction:

Amount: 10mm (converted to centimeters: 0.1cm)

Window size after deduction:

Width: 90cm – 0.1cm = 89.9cm

Height: 120cm – 0.1cm = 119.9cm

General Guidelines for Window Size

While not a strict formula, a common rule of thumb is that the total window area should be about 10% of the floor area of a room. However, this is just a starting point and can vary based on the factors mentioned above.

If you’re looking to replace an existing window, the best approach is to measure the rough opening (the space where the window is installed) and then order a window slightly smaller to allow for proper installation.
